Weekly Email for April 13th

Hi friends,

As always, see below for a full listing of upcoming events. We’d particularly like to highlight two events coming up on Sunday — a reunion of last year’s Radical Judaism class, and our monthly canvassing effort to help folks in danger of foreclosure-related evictions stay in their homes. If you haven’t canvassed with us yet but were inspired by last month’s Gragger party Schpiel, this is a great time to join up!

In addition, we’ve added a new section to the website for folks in our community looking for housing, looking to sublet, looking for housemates, etc. — check it out here. And, as always, check out some of the great events being hosted by a few of our community allies, and new fellowship and job opportunities.

Warmly,
Ben, Aaron, Sarah and Margie

Charles River Beit Midrash: Guided Jewish Text Study

Join us for guided text study, including a 30-minute lesson, and then individualized study in pairs/Chevruta. Whether you are new to Jewish study or a veteran, this is a great opportunity to learn about Jewish tradition and thought, exercise your brain, and get to know great people. Learning and free, kosher dinner begin at 7pm.

Sponsored by Cambridge Minyan, Hebrew College, Moishe/Kavod House (through a generous grant from the Bronfman Youth Fellowships in Israel Alumni Fund), Washington Square Minyan, and Minyan Tehillah, and through a generous grant from the Young Adult Task Force of Combined Jewish Philanthropies, the Charles River Beit Midrash bridges communities from Brookline, Cambridge and beyond for serious text study dedicated to social justice issues in an open, non-denominational setting. Anti-Foreclosure Canvassing with City Life/Vida Urbana

For over a year, Moishe/Kavod activists have been hitting the streets of Roxbury, Dorchester and Mattapan in partnership with our community allies at City Life/Vida Urbana. Together, we have been knocking on the doors of homeowners and tenants in properties that are in danger of foreclosure, connecting residents to legal services and to an anti-foreclosure movement that has been growing in strength.

Join us for an afternoon of canvassing (preceded by training) and movement-building. RSVP to Michelle Sternthal, Lisa Sturtz, or Lauren Wolinsky.

We’re reviving the Radical Judaism class for one more night full of discussion and schmoozery. The reunion heads off with a brief discussion jumping off of the research Anna Elena Torres’s did on Jewish anarchists struggling with their Jewish and political identities. Come for discussion, conversation, catching up and dinner sponsored by Kavod. Dinner begins at 6:30pm. Please RSVP to meira.soloff@gmail.com for food count.

Kavod Team Joins in Somerville Save Our Homes Walk

At 2pm at the Somerville High School on April 26, the Somerville Community Corporation (SCC) and Somerville Homeless Coalition are organizing a walk to raise money to protect Somerville families and individuals from homelessness. Money raised, for example, will be used to assist families who have fallen behind on their rent because of sudden unemployment, domestic violence or disability, and who face eviction without access to these funds. For more information and to sign up for the Walk, visit: http://www.somervillecdc.org/walk/

The Thursday before the Walk, Kavodniks Noah Chesnin and Michelle Sternthal are organizing a potluck in Somerville to raise awareness about the issue of homelessness in Somerville and organize a group of Kavod members to walk on the 26th. The details for the potluck are:
